Job Summary & Responsibilities

Following the unique and fabulous steerage of founder members Tim Webb (Artistic Director), Max Reinhardt (Musical Director) and Claire de Loon (Head of Design) over the last 36 years, Oily Cart is seeking new
leadership – an Artistic Director and Executive Director to lead the company confidently into the future.

Fun, joy, warmth, approachability and humour reflect the essence of Oily Cart with multidisciplinary, interactive, immersive, original work at its core. The company is particularly and centrally audience-led. Firmly established as constant deliverers of cuttingedge, immersive practice, its remit is focused on work for very young children and young people with complex disabilities, in particular Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) and Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) and more recently deafblind young people.

This original, highly-crafted and multidisciplinary work tours far and wide, nationally and internationally, including intimate one–to-one shows, participating in the Manchester International Festival or touring to New York. The new creative leadership team will need to continue to deliver the level of audience provision provided to date, enabling the company to grow and develop over the coming years.

The company is looking to appoint an Artistic Director offering a clear vision for the future development of the company. This is a full-time position. You may have worked in one or several areas of the arts but should have a strong track record in innovative art production. Passion and creativity should be at the fore.

It is envisioned that this post will be complemented and supported, through the appointment of a highly experienced full-time Executive Director with equal status. Oily Cart is open to consider a range of models of leadership. Please feel free to suggest alternative ways to deliver the job descriptions. We are ultimately looking for creative leadership that will continue and develop the unique ethos of Oily Cart’s original and innovative productions and provide the strategic leadership and business skills to steer the company.

You may be an experienced director or creative producer. Or you may be a highly experienced arts manager and be respected in your field of work. You could come from any performing arts background e.g. immersive theatre, children’s theatre, visual arts, music, etc. You may have an interest in children’s work but not necessarily direct PMLD, ASC or deafblind experience. You will offer inspiring and visionary leadership, that will define and deliver artistic objectives that support Oily Cart’s ethos. Together, with our team you will jointly be responsible for  ensuring that the company achieves its artistic, audience and financial objectives.

As Artistic Director you would:
• lead and participate fully in the production of the company’s work,
• bring creative talents together for the creation of new and original work
• represent the company at conferences, festivals, etc. and seek out new collaborations and partnerships,
• supervise shows on the road and contribute to evaluations,
• continue to nurture the company’s Artistic Associates as the artistic leaders of the future.

If not directly participating, you will enable the presentation of workshops, residencies, summer schools and associated adult training activities. You will be required to attend regular company and Board meetings, futures meetings, socials, etc. and to submit progress reports as required.

Together, the Executive Team of Artistic Director and Executive Director should be in a position to open doors to new sponsorship opportunities, donations, fundraising schemes, collaborations and events, whilst achieving substantial and long-term support particularly through Trusts and Foundations.

You are a proven leader who supports the development of colleagues and encourages all voices to be heard in order to shape growth and sustainability of the company.

The current Artistic Director, Tim Webb has kindly agreed to retain a six-month advisory role in the company and is happy to be called upon to assist in areas of artistic work or mentoring required to allow the new creative leadership to establish itself. The Board will facilitate and monitor requests made to Tim. The retiring Musical Director and co-founder, Max Reinhardt, is also willing to advise or contribute to create any new musical work if
required and free to do so.
