Tate aims to be the most artistically adventurous and culturally inclusive global art museum. We deliver this aim through activities in our four galleries across the UK (Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives, Tate Britain and Tate Modern), our digital platforms and collaborations with our national and international partners. As we enter a new stage of Tate’s development following the completion of major capital developments at Tate Modern and Tate St Ives and under the leadership of a new Director, Maria Balshaw, this is an exciting moment to be joining Tate.
Reporting directly to our Managing Director, you will be an experienced barrister or solicitor, able to lead our legal department in providing a first-class advisory and support service to Tate’s Trustees and staff at all levels. Managing a small in-house legal team and external lawyers, you will work across a broad remit from ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and developing and approving Tate’s contracts and legal procedures to handling litigation and providing advice on acquiring new works of art, new commercial initiatives, intellectual property and the legal requirements of digital initiatives.
You will need demonstrable and substantial experience in contract and commercial law, knowledge of charity law, and awareness of the legal issues affecting arts organisations. You will have exceptional problem solving, negotiation and communication skills and the ability to apply your broad range of legal experience in a practical and pragmatic way. We are looking for someone with business acumen and the ability to manage a busy caseload and work under pressure to prioritise work demands. Up-to-date knowledge of the Freedom of Information and General Data Protection Regulations and associated legislation is also important.
Our jobs are like our galleries, open to all
