About the RA Schools
The oldest independent art school in the UK, the RA Schools is situated in the heart of the Royal Academy of Arts in Piccadilly and accommodates up to 60 postgraduate fine art students over a 3-year programme.

A rare opportunity has arisen for an inspirational and talented Artist to join the core teaching staff at the RA Schools.  This is a great opportunity for a committed artist/teacher with considerable experience teaching to MA level, and across the spectrum of fine art practice, to work with the postgraduate artists at the RA Schools in the intellectual, practical and technical development of their work.

About you
You will contribute to all aspects of the programme ensuring that it remains relevant, ambitious and innovative. With at least 5 years’ teaching experience, you will be a practising artist, well versed in current approaches and thinking.
You will also have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Approachable and empathetic, you will be a well organised and competent administrator.

Applicants must be able to work flexibly, as you may be required to work different days of the week, depending upon Schools’ schedules and events.  They will not be able to take annual leave during term time; all annual leave must be taken during the Schools’ vacations.

JOB DESCRIPTION
MAIN OBJECTIVES
To design and deliver the content and schedule for a designated year group within the RA Schools
To impart a high standard of intellectual, practical and technical expertise to post graduate students.
To provide pastoral support to the students.
MAIN DUTIES
● Along with the core team of Senior Lecturers, work closely with the Keeper and Curator to deliver an ambitious, innovative, relevant postgraduate programme
● Responsible for oversight and delivery of a designated year group’s schedule including the tutorials, group critiques and other activities including a text element where relevant.
● Undertake tutorials, critiques across year groups and other teaching as necessary
● Contribute proposals for critiques, lectures, visiting artists and one-off events across the programme
● Participate in admissions process, shortlisting and interviews
● Participation in planning and execution of external events, exhibitions and study visits abroad
● Undertake administrative tasks related to your year group and, when necessary, more widely in support of the programme, both in term and vacation
● Draft varied texts and references
● Represent the RA Schools to Patrons and supporters of the Royal Academy and to external organisations and individuals
● Support the fundraising, alumni relations, and development activity of the RA Schools
● Attend internal and external meetings as necessary
● Liaise with other departments in the Royal Academy
● Ensure that Health & Safety policies, procedures and regulations are known, understood and complied with by yourself, your team and any contractors, suppliers and all others who work within the team
● Undertake any other duty that might reasonably be allocated by the Curator and Head of Schools or other RA Schools senior officer.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Necessary skills, experience and personal qualities:
● Active in your art practice, with a track record of exhibitions and related activity
● Engaging, innovative and constructively critical approach to teaching, with experience of teaching at postgraduate level and of curriculum development
● Hold a postgraduate qualification in Fine Art or equivalent professional experience
● Constantly updating knowledge and skills
● Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills – able to engage with the variety of Schools staff, RA staff, and supporters/patrons
● Demonstrable experience of high-quality pastoral care appropriate to a learning environment
● Ability and willingness to serve on RA Schools Committee and other Committees of the Royal Academy
● Capable administrator.
