Business Director – Christie’s Education

The Role:

Reporting to the President EMEA, the Business Manager is responsible for the strategic programming and commercial and administrative integrity of Christie’s global Online and Continuing Education activities.  

The role will design and implement the strategic goals of the business, realise relative programming and engagement objectives, drive profitability, seek commercial/sponsorship opportunities which will enhance the Christie’s brand as well as manage and motivate a global team.  The principal emphasis on the role is to create brand awareness through education, drive client engagement globally as well as providing commercial and strategic support to the Online and Continuing Education teams.

Specific duties & responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Financial & Client Management

  • Seek out and negotiate sponsorship and joint ventures to maximise profit
  • Provide financial insight and ROI on programmes for President EMEA and Regional Presidents as appropriate
  • Input into Client Engagement opportunities with Marketing and Client Strategy and ensure on track for delivery
  • Experience of formulating and implementing budgets internationally
  • Lead the budgeting process for London working closely with Finance

Strategy & Business Planning

  • Input in to strategic initiatives i.e. driving client engagement, effective monetisation on online and short courses
  • In conjunction with the Continuing Education and Online teams, design and implement a cohesive global education strategy to engage clients, employees and the next generation of enthusiasts
  • Review, develop and implement any improvements to operational systems (i.e. analytic tools)
  • Seek opportunities for departmental growth and ability to work with other Christie’s departments including Operations, Specialists, Marketing, Client Engagement
  • Data analysis – develop an understanding of our current audience and ability to expand that to predict potential new audiences

People Management

  • Ensure successful management and development of the team including conducting performance reviews and objective setting discussions
  • Effectively cascade any pertinent organisational communications
  • Oversee hiring, interviewing and training employees and appraising performance
  • Ensure effective delivery of employee relations
  • Develop an effective strategy to motivate teams remotely

Risk /Legal Management

  • Work with relevant stakeholders to monitor & mitigate any risk across Continuing Education and Online
  • Ensure that all regulatory issues and reports are addressed, and information delivered appropriately
  • Maintain accreditation (if needed for certificates and programming) and work closely with Legal as appropriate

Qualifications Requirements:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardisation exists
  • Strong commercial awareness
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills
  • Financial acumen and aptitude of formulating and implementing budgets internationally
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Christie’s systems including COS, JDE, intranet, website, apps
  • Ability to create & analyse Excel spreadsheets, bar graphs, reports and business correspondence

The Candidate:

  • Proven ability to lead and manage change within a fast-moving environment
  • A proven track record of designing and implementing strategies to drive profitability and growth
  • Deep knowledge of e-commerce
  • Extensive art market knowledge
  • Experience of dealing with Christie’s clients would be a distinct advantage
  • Knowledge of the education business an advantage but not essential
  • A deep knowledge of the auction world globally and across category would be a distinct advantage
  • The ability to lead and motivate a global team experience of motivating a team remotely is essential
  • A proven ability to work collaboratively at all levels
  • An accomplished public speaker with some Lecturing experience would be an advantage but not essential
  • Multiple language skills would be an advantage but not essential
