Business Manager or Business Director, Impressionist & Modern Art

Reporting to the Regional Managing Director, the Business Manager/Business Director is responsible for the financial, commercial and administrative integrity of auctions (live and online) for the London group.  The scope of the role will be significantly different depending on the skills and competencies of the successful candidate.

Business Manager

If a business manager is recruited, the role will implement the strategic goals of the business, realise departmental objectives, drive profitability, commercial deals and manage staff.  The overall remit will cover the London team and sales however strategic projects will encompass the Continental Europe region as well (private sales are not in scope).  The principal emphasis on the role is the commercial support to the business getters and requires managing and driving highly complex deals with clients and senior colleagues with a need for quick and accurate delivery.

Key responsibilities (not limited to):-

Financial & Client Management

  • Review of all non-standard financial deals and approve with RMD as necessary
  • Prepare all commercial deals for RMD & Commercial office review & approval
  • Provide financial insight and information for Finance Partner, monitoring deal and sale related costs for profitability
  • Review P&L and ensure all statistics are available on each sale for sale debriefs along with pre/post sale statistics of competitors
  • Input into Client Engagement opportunities with Marketing and Client Strategy and ensure on track for delivery
  • As required, provide oversight of Asian buyer information relating to buying expectations in all sites

Auction Strategy & Business Planning

  • Input in to strategic initiatives as directed and possible lead where appropriate
  • Assist RMD in implementation of global business plan
  • Review, develop and implement any improvements to operational systems for the department ensuring alignment with global team
  • Provide competitor analysis across Europe

People Management

  • Oversee Head of Sale Management and their team of reports to ensure successful delivery of the London sales
  • Ensure successful management and development of the team including conducting performance reviews and objective setting discussions
  • Effectively cascade any pertinent organisational communications
  • Oversee hiring, interviewing and training employees and appraising performance
  • Ensure effective delivery of employee relations

Risk/Legal Management

  • Work with Head of Sale Management to monitor & mitigate all outstanding risk across the auction channels
  • Communicate any unmitigated risk to RMD and Finance Partner

Business Director

If Business Director, in addition to the above, the role will:-

  • Have Business Management ownership of London (and Asia) sales
  • Working with the Heads of Departments and RMD, provide strategic business leadership, guidance and direction on a day to day basis.  This will include, where appropriate, developing a business plan for the relevant department to establish dominant profitability and market share or participation and possible leadership of strategic initiatives for the London departments as directed by the RMD.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a 3-5 year business plan and objectives for the auction channels to align with overall corporate objectives
  • Work closely with Marketing, Client Strategy & Object Intelligence to agree priorities and plan activity in line with business plan, driving these plans to successful completion
  • Have business management ownership of the London sales and lead the core sale profitability for all London sales with full approval of these sales and evening sale deal approval in consultation with the RMD within the agreed framework.
  • Partner with the Heads of Departments in the management and development of the Specialist team in London.
  • Lead the budgeting process for London working closely with Finance Partner, Heads of Departments and RMD
  • Oversee client engagement spend, setting priorities with Heads of Departments, RMD, Head of Client Strategy, Impressionist & Modern Art and Presidents’ offices on marketing plans and top client engagement
  • Oversee and ensure coverage and delivery for the Group’s commitment to tours, client engagement activity and internal events for London
  • Oversee and manage disputes portfolio and ensure deal contracts are analysed for due diligence and completeness ensure queries are answered and best practise is applied liaising with Legal team as required

Qualifications Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience for the relevant role
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardisation exists
  • Strong commercial awareness
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills
  • Financial acumen and aptitude of formulating and implementing budgets internationally
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Christie’s systems including COS, JDE, intranet, website, apps
  • Ability to create & analyse Excel spreadsheets, bar graphs, reports and business correspondence

Business Director additional requirements

  • Proven Strategic Vision
  • Master’s Degree in Business Management
  • Record of successful implementation of change
  • Strong management expertise
  • Experience of formulating and implementing budgets internationally
