Corporate Counsel, Corporate/Commercial – EMEA ( Maternity Cover)

Position Summary:

  • Working under the direction of the Deputy General Counsel Art EMERI and part of the EMERI legal team, handling all Art related matters relating to Christie’s EMERI Art business.
  • Work within a global team of lawyers and other professionals developing best practice and delivering a high quality, commercial legal and risk management service to the Christie’s Group as a whole.

Specific duties & responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Provide a comprehensive legal service to the Christie’s EMERI Art business, including drafting and negotiating various commercial contracts, being the legal partner for allocated Art departments delivering  general commercial and contractual solutions, advising on CITES issues, assisting the Disputes General Counsel to handle the department’s disputes, dealing with export/import queries and providing general consumer and agency advice.
  • Working with other members of the legal team to ensure compliance with all aspects of laws applicable to the various Art departments in the EMERI region, e.g. consumer laws, copyright, cultural property laws, import/export & CITES laws and regulations, sanctions.   As part of this, working with the global legal team to produce and roll out global training programmes; best practices and globally applicable precedents.
  • Develop strong relationships with external counsel in an appropriate and cost effective way keeping such relationships under continual review.
  • Develop a strong ethos of financial management, working strictly to agreed budgets and carefully managing external legal and other professional costs.
  • Work closely with other members of Christie’s legal and risk management teams to deliver globally a business focussed, pro-active seamless legal and risk management service to the Christie’s Group.
  • Develop as a business lawyer, continually improving your business skills across all commercial disciplines and develop yourself as a credible business partner, not just a legal technician.

Required qualifications/experience:

  • English law qualified solicitor with at least four years’ PQE
  • Experience in broad areas of commercial and consumer law issues in private practice or as an in-house legal adviser for an international organisation
  • Experience in drafting and negotiating IT and technology related contracts would be an advantage
  • A background and knowledge of the Art sector is desirable but not essential
  • Languages desirable but not essential
