Sir David Chipperfield CBE RA’s masterplan for the redevelopment of our 2.5-acre campus in Mayfair has now been realised, uniting our two buildings and providing Burlington Gardens with refurbished galleries, a state-of-the-art auditorium, new public spaces and a dedicated collections gallery. About this position

The Estates team comprises of around 75 inhouse staff and various contracting partners. We perform a wide range of tasks from the hard and soft service management of the estate, the support and installation of exhibitions and the development and realisation of major capital works. All of which are turned around swiftly and as seamlessly as possible to enable the RA to deliver on its aims and aspirations.

Reporting directly to the Head of Estates, this role is key to the wellbeing and safety of the organisation, its visitors and its buildings. This role is multifaceted and could be advising senior stakeholders one moment and advising on CDM compliance with regards to complex sculpture installation the next. No two days at the RA are the same so compliance and lateral thinking to overcome complex issues must go hand in hand.

Please note, this is an initial 12-month fixed-term contract.

 

About you

To be successful in your application you will understandably have a strong background in health, safety and risk management with regards to the built environment and occupational health.

Alongside of this, you will demonstrate an advanced understanding of relevant regulations and how best to comply with best practice while ensuring operational efficiency and space for creativity. Experience of managing a wide variety of stakeholders is a must, as well as dealing with the public. You must also be comfortable challenging colleagues in a constructive manner and understanding other points of view to achieve a positive outcome.

You will have worked within the boundaries of ISO accreditations and be able to lead in the migration from ISO 18001 to ISO 45001 and be able to assist as we embark on our journey to our accreditation in environmental management ISO 14001.

A team player and resourceful problem-solver, you will possess the ability to respond quickly and effectively in pressurised situations. Confident, personable and diplomatic, you will have excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills.

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB:                          Health & Safety Manager

DEPARTMENT:         Estates

REPORTING TO:      Head of Estates

MAIN OBJECTIVES

  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation and sustain best practice throughout the campus.

 

MAIN DUTIES

  • Promote a positive Health and Safety Culture within the Royal Academy through presentations, meetings and internal communications.
  • Accountable for compliance with all current HSE legislation, including fire safety regulations.  Ensure migration and then maintain ISO 45001 accreditation.
  • Line management of the Safety and Compliance Officer.
  • Keep up to date all HSE policies and procedures, advising the RA of legal updates and changes to legislation.
  • Enforce safety management on site, working with appointed contractors review their H&S systems and ensure they are meeting their commitments.
  • Carry out audits and inspections of site and implement action plans when needed
  • Liaising with department managers to ensure risk assessments for all areas of the Academy are kept up to date.
  • Ensure all areas of the Academy adhere to RA Health and Safety policy and procedures (including RA Schools, office areas (work force of 400+ staff), exhibition activities, RA Shop, Events etc.
  • Manage the RA’s Permit to Work system and authorise permits where appropriate.
  • Work with Exhibition curators, Managers and Art handling teams in planning stages of exhibitions, from implementation to de-installation, ensuring compliance to RA policies and procedures.
  • Organise and chair quarterly staff H&S meeting.
  • Train staff members on best practice in relation to risk assessment, DSE online training.
  • Coordinate regular training for staff, to include First Aid, Fire Safety, HSE Training for Managers, IOSH training etc.
  • Manage staff inductions to ensure all new members of staff receive information regarding the RA’s health and safety procedures.
  • Ensure that incidents and accidents are investigated and maintain records producing monthly statistics on accidents, incidents and near misses.
  • Contribute to H&S budget planning for 5-year period, to include plan for improvements, training etc.
  • Comply with all relevant H&S policies, procedures and regulations and take appropriate and reasonable care for the safety of colleagues and visitors to the Academy.
  • Undertake any other duty which may reasonably be allocated by the Head of Estates or other senior staff member.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • At least 5 years’ experience of HSE management within a complex site.
  • Proactive in approach.
  • Cooperative and collaborative, flexible and solution orientated.
  • Strong advocacy skills, to ensure H&S is front of mind in all RA activities.
  • Demonstrable experience of training others and clearly sharing knowledge.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to build good relationships with colleagues.
  • NEBOSH Diploma, relevant NVQ 5, equivalent qualification of demonstrable equivalent experience essential.
  • Auditing qualification preferred.
  • Strong written skills to produce policies, reports and maintain HSE system.
  • Excellent IT skills to confidently use MS Office suite – to prepare presentations and reports and maintain spreadsheets etc.
  • Supremely well organised.
  • Well-connected in the H&S training sector to identify specialist training providers.
  • Good negotiator, to ensure best value training courses.
