Position Summary:

The Group Indirect Tax Manager position will initially focus on UK Indirect Tax compliance with a developmental opportunity to take on other indirect tax jurisdictions. Reporting to the Group Indirect Tax Director, you will partner with a current part-time Group Indirect Tax Manager and have a mentoring role for the Group Indirect Tax Assistant.

Specific duties & responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Statutory reporting to HMRC.
  • Advisory support for private sales (non-auction transactions).
  • Management of the Temporary Admission Datafreight transmissions & E-customs to clear import tax entries (monthly transmission are carried out by the Indirect Tax Assistant but you will be expected to have a working knowledge) – training will be given.
  • Assisting with in-house and client facing advisory enquiries as needed.
  • Supporting the Group Indirect Tax Director in dealing with HMRC audits.
  • Assisting colleagues in Finance with reconciliations of the indirect tax balances.
  • Offering VAT training to colleagues in the wider business.

Development of the role

Once established in management of UK compliance, the candidate will be expected to support the Group Indirect Tax Director in other jurisdictions, primarily the EU, Switzerland, Dubai and the USA (and other jurisdictions as needed). Training will be given in the bespoke art market indirect tax rules of these jurisdictions.

Candidate skills & attributes:

  • A good sold UK indirect tax background
  • An interest in specialising in the highly niche area of indirect tax peculiar to the art market
  • A self-starter with good organisational skills to help manage the day to day running of the Indirect Tax function
  • Strong advisory skills (written and spoken) in explaining complex bespoke VAT rules
  • Good interpersonal skills to help mentor junior colleagues
  • Experience in the indirect tax rules of non-UK locations would be useful, but not essential.
  • Experience with JD Edwards accounting software, or similar product would also be an advantage.

Training will be given on the legal basis of the specialist UK VAT rules peculiar to trading at auction and trading in the art sector in general.
