Junior Specialist – South Asian, Modern & Contemporary Art

To support Head of Sale in putting together the annual London sale, and assisting with New York sales and Mumbai site (for Contemporary Indian Art) as required. To execute the specialist responsibilities as outlined below.

Junior Specialist Responsibilities:

(Duties include but are not limited to the following)

•                 Research property including authenticity, provenance and exhibition history using libraries, on-line databases, and outside experts (such as curators, dealers, publishers etc.)

•                 Catalogue property for public sales, namely one London sale, and assist with preparation of two New York (as required) plus other Single-Owner or multi-department sales as necessary. Maintain and update in internal systems

•                 Catalogue and research property for private sale

•                 When possible, prepare property for hilling sessions (meetings with Head of Sale/Specialists to determine value, condition and marketability of property); and amend catalogue sheets after hilling sessions

•                 Assist in business generation and long term client development in association with, and under supervision of, the department head and senior specialists; work to manage a network of clients and contacts

•                 Flag any authenticity concerns and condition issues in a timely manner to appropriate specialist

•                 Develop own specialist knowledge to build credibility in a specialist area, build and understanding of the current Contemporary Indian market and the key players

•                 Work on proposals, valuations and copyright

•                 Send out special interest letters

•                 Prepare condition reports for property for private sale and auction

•                 Assist client viewings during sale week

•                 Review incoming valuation enquiries/estimate requests and assist sale co-ordinator with maintenance of London pipeline

•                 Assist with catalogue production and layout

•                 Coordinate photography and colour correction, with sale co-ordinator

•                 Serve as liaison with outside experts including conservators and framers

•                 Assist clients in the absence of the Head of Sale

•                 Liaise with other departmental specialists in contemporary and Asian arts departments as appropriate

•                 Liaise with Marketing/Special events re ads, events relating to sales (e.g. proofing, getting text from specialists, signage display, organising party lists etc) for London and Mumbai

•                 Pre and post-sale tasks (co-ordinating photography, sold since sales) and client issues

•                 Organise specialist tours for staff and clients

•                 Work closely with sale co-ordinator and art handler for all incoming properties

•                 Maintain department library, working with NY Junior Specialist and maintain all literature and reviews of upcoming exhibitions in UK and rest of Europe

•                 Participate actively in the art community to raise Christie’s profile

•                 Participate in telephone bidding with clients during the auction

•                 Other duties as assigned by Manager

Qualification Requirements:

•                 Bachelor’s degree in Contemporary or Modern South Asian Art category preferred, or equivalent work experience. Master’s degree preferred.

•                 Good knowledge of, and demonstrable interest in, the wider art market

•                 Excellent communications skills and interpersonal skills

•                 Strong sale administrative experience

•                 Strong organisational skills, ability to work to tight deadlines

•                 Proficiency in Word, Excel and Outlook

•                 Language skills preferred
