About the Role
Artists are at the heart of everything we do. Our rich legacy, along with our Collection, our buildings and our work today, offers artists a powerful platform. Now, as we pass our 250th birthday, we need to secure our future. The Future Academy is our campaign to renew and restore the RA Schools, to empower all our audiences through art, to inspire through our exhibitions, and to protect our collection for future generations.
The Major Gifts and Campaigns team is responsible for raising significant philanthropic income to support The Future Academy campaign. We manage relationships with major donors, creating engaging giving opportunities, matching and exceeding our donors’ expectations.
We are seeking an exceptional individual to play a pivotal role within the team as Senior Major Gifts Manager. The Senior Major Gifts Manager will help to drive forward and implement the strategy to maximise income from individuals and trusts and foundations. This position will manage some of the RA’s most high-profile philanthropic relationships and provide outstanding donor care. A talented communicator and strong team player, you will be flexible and enthusiastic, and able to demonstrate a genuine interest in the visual arts and a passionate belief in the work, vision and mission of the Royal Academy of Arts.

To contribute to the overall success of the Major Gifts and Campaigns team:
Secure significant funding for the new RA campaign (capital and endowment), exceeding annual personal financial targets and actively contributing to the strategy for maximining income.
Drawing on extensive experience, demonstrate exceptional donor relationship management both for existing and prospective donors.
In consultation with key RA personnel, undertake the preparation of individual proposals and funding applications at the highest level.
Work collaboratively across the RA, and with Senior Non-Executives as required, to ensure opportunities for securing major gifts are maximised.
Keep up to date with the external funding environment and be responsive to opportunity, identify trends and create an environment that encourages innovative and ambitious fundraising.
Work collegiately to promote a supportive team culture and ‘one RA’.
Demonstrate a lively interest in, and understanding of the RA, and a passionate belief in its mission.
Fundraising and Strategy Development
Contribute to and implement the agreed strategy for maximising grants and donations from individuals as well as private, corporate, institutional trust, foundations, livery companies as required.
Prepare compelling individual proposals and grant applications demonstrating strong attention to detail and the ability to communicate complex information on paper succinctly and clearly.
Prepare and deliver inspiring pitches to prospects, donors and RA Trustees, demonstrating the ability to convey complex information succinctly and clearly.
Research and cultivate new potential donors working with other colleagues in Development as well as Chair of Schools Campaign and other Senior Non-Executives as required.
Take responsibility for collating information on RA capital and endowment projects in coordination with colleagues across the RA.
Lead the development of a strong and consistent portfolio of projects for donors to support, in close liaison with colleagues across the RA, in particular the Finance department.
Provide clear, timely and professional internal communication to ensure donor’s needs are represented across the organisation in development of capital projects.
Work with colleagues across the Development Department to identity overlaps between trusts and foundations and individual prospects or funders.
Report to the Head of Major Gifts on income and expenditure budgets as requested.
Individual and Trust Donor Relationship Management
Maintain ‘best-practice’ relationships with funders, including the submission of regular reports, accounts, invitations to talks, tours, projects, workshops, private views, etc.
Help to actively oversee the delivery and quality of major gift events. Liaise with the Events Team as necessary. Act as host at such events, as appropriate.
Demonstrate exceptional donor ‘aftercare’, ensuring that agreements made with donors are followed through and the needs of donors represented across the organisation at the highest level.
Maintain and develop the database, ensuring its ongoing integrity and take responsibility for ensuing the RA adheres to recent GDPR regulations.
Responsible for own administration, devise and implement appropriate processes and procedures to achieve agreed targets.
Responsible for tracking expenditure budget against agreed deliverables and maximising income by supporting tax effective giving.
Comply with all relevant Health & Safety policies, procedures and regulations and take appropriate and reasonable care for the safety of colleagues and visitors to the Academy.
Undertake any other duties which may reasonably be allocated by the Deputy Director, Head of Major Gifts or other senior officers.
Knowledge and Experience
Educated to degree level or equivalent
Proven track record of raising income to target
Experience of securing five and six-figure gifts
Experience of devising and maintaining budgets
Qualities and Skills
Excellent written and presentational skills – both articulate and fluent
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: socially confident, diplomatic and with advocacy skills. Able to manage external contacts, forge strong links and encourage interest, a relationship builder
Ability to gather and present information, compile reports, make recommendations, set realistic timetables, to monitor progress, resolve difficulties and ensure plans are fully and successfully implemented
Ability to translate agreed strategy to achieved objectives
A team player: sharing and building on ideas, ability to take the lead on occasion as well as joining and supporting other initiatives
Flexible approach to work, with a willingness to work outside of core hours (e.g. to attend evening events), and availability to travel in the UK
Well-organised and efficient administrator: able to co-ordinate own work programme, establish appropriate priorities, undertake own administrative work
IT-literate: knowledge of database systems an advantage
An active interest in the visual arts and a commitment to the aims and objectives of the Royal Academy
